Shbuildings, technology at the cultural Heritage disposal
SHBuildings is a cooperation project led from Castilla León Region. In the project we find companies, technology centres, universities and administrations from Spain, France and Portugal. The project is funded by the South West European Space Territorial Cooperation Programme – Interreg IV SUDOE and is focused on the development complete management system for heritage buildings.
OBJECTIVE
The Project aims to develop different technological tools to minimize the cost on restoration, maintenance and Management of Heritage buildings and improving its energy efficiency. Thus, the project results intend to guarantee and improve the preventive conservation of the heritage buildings and integrate that preventive conservation together with the energy consumption, the control of visitors and the security of the buildings contributing to the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the heritage.
BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY
The SHBuilding Project is a step forward in the application of new technologies in the cultural heritage. Based in cloud computing and following the M2M philosophy, the system will allow following and monitoring the different parameters from a unique control centre. This way it will be possible to know, in real time, if there is any variation of the controlled parameters, allowing a prompt reaction and avoiding risky situations. So far, the traditional monitoring systems were oriented to the curing conservation, that is: to solve the damage once produced, however the SHBuildings system will facilitate the preventive conservation: act before the damage is done. This new concept optimizes the maintenance and operation resources allowing a better facility management.
As a matter of fact, though it is a flexible system capable of being adapted to the necessities of every building, it is prepared to control different facilities from a unique central node. Different buildings with different parameters, in real time, all at the same time. A new flexible tool is available for the heritage buildings managers facilitating a global vision of all the goods and controlled facilities.
PARTICIPANTS
SHbuildings is coordinated by Fundación Santa María la Real, from Aguilar de Campoo, that is working on preventive conservation of historical heritage buildings through a Heritage Monitoring System. They work side by side with other entities fromSpain,FranceandPortugalsuch as Fundación Cartif, Fundación Tecnalia, AIDIMA, Centro de Ressources Technologiques NOBATEK and the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
Additionally, the project has achieved the necessary collaboration from other administrations and institutions such as Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourisme of the Regional Government of Castilla y León, the Council of the province of Palencia, the City Council of Palencia, the City Council of Bayonne, the Spanish Association of Historical Heritage Restoration Companies and the European Association of Architectural Heritage Restoration Companies.
BUDGET AND DURATION
With a budget of 903.684 euro, the project will length 26 months and it is divided in different work packages with the final objective of the creation of a complete management system for heritage historical facilities that includes software and hardware, based in cloud computing. The project has first designed the methodology, now it is developing the technology and will end with the three pilot protitypes in three different buildings.
PILOT CASES
The Project responsibles have selected three buildings of different type, use and context in order to test the new system and demonstrate its flexibility and adaptability. SHBuildings will be installed in the cathedral of Palencia, a building included in the socalled space Smart City Valladolid-Palencia; in the Vasc and History Museum of Bayonne in France and in the Roriz church, in a small Portuguese village close to Porto and that is included in the Intervention Plan “Románico Atlántico”.
- The Cathedral of Palencia is a big Heritage building that has a large amount of valuable goods. It combines both its tourist and liturgical use. The project will be focused on energy efficiency and preventive conservation.
- The small church of Roriz in Portugal is a clear example of Heritage building in the rural environment. It is in a good conservation and preservation status, but it has a reduced liturgical use. In this case the project will also focus on the preventive conservation. Registries obtained from Roriz will be the reference for the development and the application of the monitoring system in similar facilities.
- Finally, the Vasc and History Museum of Bayonne is a heritage facility with civil purposes, in an urban environment and with a high and important activity. The focus will be on help the facility managers to optimize its resources and get better energy efficiency, implanting systems for security and preventive conservation.
