Research of the main wood based boards biodegradability: plywood, particle board, and Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF). BIOTAB-MA.
The biodegradability of the main raw materials used to manufacture furnitures is researched. Although at first everybody supposes inherent biodegradability of wood, the wooden boards are made with formaldehyde-based glues, which may affect the biodegradability of the board. Furthermore, depending on the raw material with which the board is manufactured, it can come from treated wood (like xylophagous) that significantly reduce the biodegradability of these boards.
The project will research the more suitable methodology for the biodegradability analysis on wooden boards. With this methodology, the biodegradability will be researched in the main three groups of boards used today for the manufacture of furnitures.
Biodegradability will relate to different factors (type of board, glue, type of raw material, etc.). With the results obtained improvements in the production of these materials will be proposed to improve biodegradability without affecting the quality of the boards. Finally, the results will be integrated within the regulations now in force for producing organic products, eco-labels, and so on.
