Best Practices and Technologies to Develop Green Wastes and Residues as Raw Materials for Variants of Utilization
The main object of the project is the testing, demonstration and transfer of the applicability of conventional and innovative technologies and methods to process woody wastes and residues from landscape conservation as well as agriculture and forestry. It aims to produce raw materials, previously classified as waste, for energy and material utilization chains and determine and evaluate best practices and technologies in the field to develop economically and ecologically efficient material flows.
Among others, objectives of the project include:
Demonstrating innovative overall concepts while ensuring a positive energy balance,
Preventively minimizing environmental impacts of the staging processes,
Demonstrating economic-ecological potentials to eliminate barriers to development and utilization,
Tangibly increasing the proportion of biomass residues utilized as energy and material,
Presenting sustainable refinancing options to preserve designated protected areas in Europe,
Mobilizing unutilized and/or underutilized potentials and motivating forest owners,
Developing new service sectors promoting employment and
Generating sustainable impulses for regional development.
The project steps are the following:
T1) Prototyping of an assessment system to determine the environmentally compatible potentials of biomass residues from agricultural and forest ecosystems utilizable as energy. An assessment system to determine developable woody biomass residues (quantity and structure) in agricultural and forest ecosystems and incorporating social, ecological and economic aspects of sustainability will be prototyped. The intended outcome is a system-supported working assessment that facilitates making fundamental decisions about action planning and preparation (equipment used, staff assignments, etc.) to develop potentials on the basis of economic considerations.
T2) Testing and Evaluation of practices and technologies to generate assortments of biomass residues during and subsequent to the harvesting process. The technical feasibility of different practices and technologies in the harvesting process, i.e. the process of generating biomass residues, to generate an assortment of biomass residues at an early stage based on their utilization will be tested.
T3) Testing and evaluation of cost and quality optimizing storage methods, strategies and techniques.Technologies, practices and equipment in storage processes will be tested to identify quality improvements for assortments that are reproducible in the medium and long-term and to form expanded assortments in the storage process.
T4) Testing and evaluation of transportation and identification technologies and practices by applying innovative pilot solutions.
T5) Prototypical utilization of the developed assortment in processes of material and energy recovery. Innovative utilization technologies and practices will be prototypically applied with the objective of testing the processability of assortments of treated wastes and residues from landscape conservation and forestry and agricultural cultivation actions as well as testing the marketability of the pilots. One significant aim will be presenting realistic potentials fro the development of unutilized biomass residues as raw material based on its utilization.
T6) Testing and piloting of solutions and practices to plan, control and monitor material flows and to eliminate specific barriers to action.
T7) Determination of economic best practices allowing for regional site factors and environmental impacts. Based on the results of testing and piloting in Actions 2-8, developable biomass potentials will be used to identify and evaluate economically and ecologically expedient and sustainable utilization chains for wastes and residues from landscape conservation and agriculture and forestry, which incorporate supplier, service provider and buyer structures and to derive other technical and organizational measures.
